Aditya Basak

Born in 1953, Aditya Basak is a leading contemporary Indian artist recognized for his evocative and surreal artistic styleHe graduated in 1977 from the Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata, and has since established himself as a vital presence in the Indian and international art scenes.

Basak has held numerous solo exhibitions across the globe, including shows in New York (1999), Art Today in New Delhi (2002), Art World in Chennai (2004), and Anant Art Gallery in New Delhi (2006). His participation in key group exhibitions includes Edge of the Century in Delhi, Exhibition of Contemporary Bengal Artists in Dhaka (1999), Art of Bengal at the NGMA, Mumbai, Art on Paper at CIMA, Kolkata (2002), and Agony and Ecstasy at Aakriti Art Gallery, Kolkata (2007). A member of the Society of Contemporary Artists since 1984, he has also been actively involved in several art camps and workshops held in India, the UK, Australia, Thailand, and China.

Basak has been honored with numerous prestigious awards, including the National Award in 1986 and the West Bengal State Government Award in 1988. His works are part of several significant public and private collections, both in India and abroad. Rooted in a fascination with the blurred boundaries between fantasy and reality, Basak’s art often explores the darker recesses of the human psyche. His paintings depict haunting, dreamlike imagery that draws from personal memory, collective trauma, and subconscious fears. Through symbol figures and layered narratives, his works invite viewers into a world that is both surreal and unsettling—compelling them to confront the unseen emotional landscapes within all of us.
