Suhas Roy, born in 1936 in Bengal, was a renowned Indian artist best known for his poetic and romanticized depictions of the female form. He completed his graduation in painting from the Indian College of Arts and Draftsman ship, Kolkata in 1958. In 1965, supported by a French government exchange programme, he travelled to Paris, where he studied graphic art and mural design, further enriching his artistic vision.
Roy became a member of the Society of Contemporary Artists, Calcutta in 1960, a significant association that shaped much of his early career. From 1971 to 1973, he served as the Principal of the Indian College of Art and Draftsman ship, after which he joined Kala Bhavana, Santiniketan, as a lecturer in painting, where he inspired generations of young artists. Roy’s artistic focus revolves around the female face and form, rendered with a sense of romanticism, sensuality, and enigma. His characters drift through a dreamscape, hovering between the tangible and the surreal. Though inspired by everyday life, his subjects are imbued with a profound emotional depth and a mystical quality, reflecting his fascination with the unknown and the intangible aspects of human experience. Suhas Roy's artworks have been exhibited across the globe at several prestigious platforms, including the Asian Graphic Prints Traveling Exhibition in the USA and the Tokyo Print Biennale in Japan. His work has also been showcased in countries such as France, Yugoslavia, Romania, Czechoslovakia, and Hungary. In India, his works have been exhibited at some of the country’s most prestigious art institutions, including the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi, Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai, and the Lalit Kala Akademi.
