Abbas Batliwala

Abbas Batliwala, born in 1958 in Udaipur, Rajasthan, has established a unique identity in contemporary Indian art with his emotive paintings, notably distinguished by their bold and expressive eyes."

After completing his formal education in drawing and painting from the University of Udaipur in 1982, he began a dedicated journey into the visual arts. Working mainly with oil on canvas, his art draws heavily from the textures and rhythms of rural life, rendered with emotional depth and a unique stylistic flair. The signature large eyes in his works, initially arresting, gradually reveal layers of tenderness, vulnerability, and childlike wonder, pulling viewers into a silent dialogue with the subject. His artworks have been showcased at prominent institutions including the National Gallery of Modern Art, Lalit Kala Akademi in New Delhi and Jaipur, as well as Jawahar Kala Kendra. Abbas has also represented Indian art on international platforms like the 6th Asian Art Biennale in Bangladesh and the 7th Triennale in India.

He has participated in numerous art camps and seminars across the country, including those organized by the North Zone Cultural Centre in Lucknow, ICA's National Awardees Camp, and The Golden Triangle Through the Artist’s Eyes was a notable art initiative organized by Welcome Group in collaboration with Modi International. Over the years, his artistic excellence has been recognized with honours such as the Sculpture Award from the Rajasthan Lalit Kala Akademi (1984) and a Gold Medal in Drawing and Painting from the same academy. Batliwala paintings are not only visually compelling but also emotionally profound, making them treasured pieces in both public and private art collections
