Subrato Mandal

Born in 1958 in Bardhhaman, West Bengal, Subrato is a renowned printmaker who completed his graduation from Visva Bharati University, Santiniketan, and earned his MFA in printmaking. He was mentored by legendary artists such as Somnath Hore, Sanat Kar, and Lalu Shah. Subrato perceives printmaking as more than the transfer of ink onto paper; for him, it is a synthesis of sculptural tactility and painterly expression. This philosophy led him to develop a unique technique involving polymer materials and the viscosity printing process to create textured, multidimensional prints.

His artistic ethos centres on the themes of existence, individuality, and devotion, which he believes are interwoven with love, duty, and self-interest. Over the years, Subrato has received several prestigious honours, including the Kalavid Samman from the Lalit Kala Akademi (2003), the Grand Prize at the Rajasthan Lalit Kala Akademi, the 9th International Print Biennial Award from Bharat Bhavan Bhopal (2011), and the Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh Award from the City Palace Museum, Jaipur (2017).

He has showcased his work extensively in India and internationally, participating in exhibitions and art camps in Taiwan, Japan, Germany, the USA, and Bangladesh. His art is housed in prominent public and private collections, including the National Museum of Fine Arts in Taiwan, Jawahar Kala Kendra in Jaipur, and various collections across Europe, Asia, and the United States.
