Prof. Shabbir Hassan Quazi, a renowned painter and academic, was born on 15 August 1946 in Ajmer, where the city’s spiritual and cultural atmosphere profoundly shaped his artistic sensibilities. He obtained his M.A. in Drawing and Painting from the University of Udaipur in 1969 and went on to receive a Ph.D. in the same discipline from M.L. Sukhadia University, Udaipur, in 1998.
Deeply inspired by nature, Sufism, and traditional art, Quazi’s practice reimagines calligraphy as abstract visual expression, weaving together geometric and calligraphic forms to create rhythmic compositions that echo both the spiritual and the natural world. His art reflects a meditative exploration of the subconscious, delving into the connection between the human spirit and the divine.
Driven by the belief that man is a reflection of the Creator's mind, his art expresses a soulful journey towards inner purification and creative truth. Prof. Quazi began his academic career at Banasthali Vidyapeeth in 1969, later joining the University of Rajasthan in 1974, and eventually teaching at Kenyatta University, Nairobi in 1984, where he played a vital role in mentoring young artists. Over his 33-year tenure at the University of Rajasthan, he significantly enriched its academic fabric and was pivotal in initiating new programs in the Faculty of Fine Arts. His innovative teaching methods and administrative contributions, including his role on the Vice-Chancellor’s committee, left a lasting impact.
Prof. Quazi holds the distinction of being the first Indian to receive the prestigious “Médaille de Bronze” from the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, Paris, in recognition of his excellence in visual art. His works have been showcased at esteemed venues such as Rashtrapati Bhavan, the residences of Mrs. Sonia Gandhi and the Prime Minister of India, as well as at the National Gallery of Modern Art and the Lalit Kala Akademi in New Delhi, affirming his stature in both national and international art circles.
