Ram Jaiswal, an acclaimed Indian artist, was born on 5th September 1937 in Sadabad, Mathura. He earned his bachelor's degree in Fine Arts from the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Lucknow, and later served as an artist at Lucknow Medical College for three years. Growing up in Lucknow and Meerut during the height of the Bengal School's influence, his artistic sensibilities were shaped by the wash painting tradition and the lyrical portrayal of mythological themes. Renowned for his ability to merge classical Indian aesthetics with poetic expression, Jaiswal developed a distinctive style deeply rooted in Indian culture and emotional resonance.
Beyond painting, Ram Jaiswal is also a published writer, having authored four short story collections—Asurakshit, Ugrah, Samaydansh, and Vish-jal—along with a poetry compilation titled Bimb-Prati Bimb. Some of his most notable artworks include Bandi, Viyogi, The Shores of Gomti, Residency, and Ascetic Shiva, the latter showcasing his mastery in capturing nature through the wet-on-wet watercolour technique. His deep-rooted connection to Indian heritage and refined sense of rhythm and color have been lauded by Padma Shri awardee and former vice-chancellor of Lucknow University, Radha Kamal Mukherjee, who described Jaiswal’s work as a seamless fusion of literary depth and traditional artistic excellence.
In 1997, Ram Jaiswal received the esteemed Kalavid Award from the Rajasthan Lalit Kala Akademi, followed by the Vishisht Sahityakar Samman from the Rajasthan Sahitya Academy in 1998, honoring his significant contributions to Indian art and literature.
