Born in 1965 in Gaya, Bihar, Ashok is a distinguished sculptor who earned his postgraduate degree in Sculpture from the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda.
He began his teaching career as a faculty member at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute in Mauritius, where he also established a metal casting foundry, contributing significantly to the local art infrastructure.
Ashok's sculptural journey began with clay, but over time he explored a diverse range of materials including plaster of Paris, fiberglass, scrap metal, and various types of stone. Among these, marble became his preferred medium. His ability to transform the rigidity of stone into the delicate forms of flowers and the dynamic presence of birds is a testament to his artistic finesse. His nature-inspired themes reflect a deep sensitivity, where hard marble takes on the softness of petals and the stillness of stone captures the vitality of life.
In addition to his nature-based works, Ashok has created numerous figurative sculptures, particularly of women. He has also combined his interest in yoga with sculpture, creating powerful representations of yogic postures in multiple materials. Through experimentation with texture and form, his works often evoke introspective themes—visually articulating the emptiness and stillness of the human mind through stone and marble.
Ashok has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions, workshops, and symposia both in India and abroad. Some notable events include the International Sculpture Seminar in Carrara, Italy (2003); the Neerja Modi International Marble Sculpting Symposium in Jaipur (2011); a sculptural project at Shiv Dham Yoga Centre in Orlando, USA (2014); and events at WZCC, Udaipur.
His artistic contributions have earned him several honours, including awards from the All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society (AIFACS) and prestigious recognitions such as a Diploma from the Kemijärvi Wood Sculpting Association in Finland (2003, 2007, 2013), and the Gunjan Samman from Keshav Navneet, Jaipur (2004)
